Chapter 10

“What was that all about?” Theresa asked sliding into Kevin’s passenger seat.

“What do you mean?” He waited patiently for her to situate herself then let his expensive European coupe pulse to life. The sleek, hunter green machine handled well. Too well. It made a man feel like racing. He repeated his question with irritation dripping in his tone, “What do you mean, Theresa?”

“I can tell you’re getting in one of your moods, and you are not about to take it out on me on a day like today.”

Kevin ran a hand over his face. “I’m sorry, Re-Re. I don’t know what’s wrong with me.”

“I bet it’s that chick. What did you call her? Honeybee?”

Theresa kicked off her shoes then turned in her seat with her legs curled under her. God help him if she was getting comfortable.

“So, tell me about her.”

Sighing, he let the tension slip out of him as well. “I don’t know, Re-Re. She lives in the D.C. area. We’ve been working together for about a year, but I met her for the first time only a few weeks ago.”

“Well, let’s see. That told me nothing,” she quipped.

“Okay, she’s Gentry and Associates number one consultant. She’s been with them for a few of years now. She’s—”

“That’s not what I mean,” Theresa pouted. “Kevin you’re hedging. Y’all messing around?”

“No.” Trust Theresa to get straight to the point.

“Why not?”

“This is none of your business, Re-Re,” he responded.

“Okay,” Theresa drawled. “If you don’t want to talk about that… Then maybe you’ll want to know what I saw.”

Kevin turned to look at her.

“You know I love Tim like a brother.”

“Yeah.”

“But, and I’m just telling you this because I think you should know, but—”

“What is it, Theresa, damn?”

“I saw his car down the street.”

Kevin’s tires skidded as he slammed his car into a parking space.

Small town.

Nicky Davidson lived down the street from Theresa.

“Huntington,” Theresa called as Hunny entered the pre-show melee. There were tons of beautiful people mingling. The air fairly buzzed with excited energy. When Hunny saw Theresa, she realized this was definitely her element. From the looks of it, she had dressed down realizing everyone else would be decked out in black and sequins. Classical glitz and glamour. Not Theresa. She was standing there in a snug camel-colored cashmere sweater and a shiny pair of camel leather pants. On her feet, she wore a pair of high-heeled ostrich-skin books. Around her neck was a slender tan strap. Hanging from it was a golden tusk. The mix of fabrics and colors seemed perfect for winter in Florida. Her straighter-than-straight short hair was slicked back on her head as appeared to be her regular look. She was elegant perfection without looking like she planned it. Huntington swallowed. Whatever Theresa found for her to wear was not going to compare to the well-coordinated ensemble.

Theresa wrapped Huntington’s wrist in a steel hold and dragged Hunny behind her as she plunged through the crowd. While people seemed to naturally part and give deference to the stalking diva, Hunny struggled to weed through them and keep up.
